10 tips to save on your car hire in Costa Rica

  1. Use filters to find the right car: Refine your search by vehicle type and features. Whether you're looking for an SUV for additional space, a convertible for summer drives, or an economy car for budget-friendliness, utilise the filters on Expedia to discover the ideal match for your journey.
  2. Book in advance to help lower costs: Rental prices can vary based on demand, so it's advisable to secure your car well ahead of your trip. By booking in advance, you're likely to obtain lower rates and enjoy greater availability, particularly during peak seasons.
  3. Consider a smaller car for savings: Smaller vehicles are typically more affordable to rent and easier to navigate in crowded areas. Mid-size rentals strike a good balance between cost, comfort, and fuel efficiency.
  4. Age guidelines: Drivers under the age of 30 may encounter higher deposits or daily surcharges, and certain vehicle categories—such as SUVs or premium models—might not be available. This can also apply to renters over the age of 70. Always verify the age requirements prior to booking.
  5. Check fuel policies: Some rentals operate on a full-to-full fuel policy, meaning you must return the vehicle with a full tank to avoid additional charges. This is generally the most advantageous option. Others may provide full-to-empty or prepaid fuel choices, which are acceptable as well. Just ensure you return the car empty in that scenario.
  6. Save on city and airport pickups: You will often incur a surcharge for collecting your rental car at airports, but the convenience may justify the extra cost.
  7. Know your payment options: Many car hire companies only accept credit cards for payment.
  8. Understand your insurance coverage: Car hire insurance can help you avoid unnecessary expenses and provides added peace of mind in case of unexpected events during your trip. It's straightforward to add car hire insurance when booking through Expedia.
  9. Consider unlimited mileage: If you plan to embark on long road trips, seek out rentals that offer unlimited mileage to steer clear of additional costs.
  10. Bring your driver's license and ID: A valid driver's license is essential for renting a car.

The park’s 680 hectares are crossed with hiking trails, which meander from the coast up into the mountains.

In the northwest of Costa Rica, the town of Monteverde is hidden away in the mountains. This area is world-famous for its biodiverse forests bedecked in mist and clouds. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is home to countless wildlife species, including jaguar, ocelot and the colourfully plumed quetzal. How you explore the forest is up to you: follow the marked trails cut through ferns and orchids, zipline through the tree tops or walk on suspended bridges through the dense foliage.

All roads eventually pass through the capital of San Jose, and it’s well worth parking up to explore. We certainly have not heard the last of Arenal – it’s just having a rest! Even so, without the fireworks, there’s still plenty of reasons to visit - Still, there is much to see and do here – and rainforest hikes, whitewater rafting, horseback riding are just a few.
